SSL EV2 brings me back to that same sound, and my presets reflect what I like to do with the original console. My presets are meant to be used as starting points: they represent my methodology of adding articulation on top and warmth on the bottom; clearing up muddiness in the middle; then using the channel dynamics to compress, adding punch and level control, and gating to reduce unnecessary noise.
My acoustic presets will give just about any string instrument that SSL shine that I love. This plugin takes the SSL sound to an all-new level. From the gorgeous saturation to the difference in 'focus' between the Brown and Black EQ options, this completely covers all the bases.
My Speaker Phone Vocal preset is a quick way to make your vocals pop on any device. I love using this effect on rap vocal adlibs for a balanced contrast to the lead vocal. A key element of that sound is aggressive drums and the EV2 gets you there. For drums and bass the Brown Knob is my EQ type of choice for its hard plastic baseball bat in your face quality. My Vocal preset gives your and kick the space to knock and drive the song without distorting vocals.
My Kick preset gets your low-end thumping while enhancing tone to cut through. My Snare preset is from an acoustic kit perfect for getting that fullness and slap. Waves has yet again raised the bar! Waves have really outdone themselves again! My presets for kicks give you that boost while adding air and clarity on the attack for a bigger, cleaner feel. My SN preset will keep your snares fat and combat hi-hat bleed. It sounds amazing on everything, and I really love it for finding that shiny sweet spot to get a perfectly balanced lead vocal.
With the Brown and Black EQ options plus the Mic Pres, this thing sounds clean, with a rich sonic quality that goes with any workflow. My Metal presets bring that SSL flavor to any metal track, with everything from a dirty, in-your-face snare, to a puncy, clean, sample-free snare, all the way to perfectly placed guitars that focus only the frequencies you need.
The saturation is perfect and the aggressiveness of the comp section is unbelievable! I find myself using this plugin to explore tones more than any other SSL plugin.
For me, those knobs always get turned first to clean up frequency range and guage how much I can dump before even grabbing the EQ — an old SSL trick to boost low shelf with a filter dump to get a tunable curve bump.
To re-imagine that analog modelling must have taken some serious magic because the EV2 is next level. It takes the SSL sound and workflow I love and enhances it in every way.
